Dialysis Access Thrombectomy and Clot Removal in Arizona

What Is a Thrombectomy for Dialysis Access?

A thrombectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove a blood clot (thrombus) from your dialysis access, whether you have a fistula or a graft. Clots can slow or block blood flow, making dialysis less effective or difficult to perform. Removing the clot helps restore proper circulation so you can continue treatment without interruption.

Dialysis access sites, especially AV grafts, can develop narrowing inside the vessel over time. This narrowing slows blood flow and increases the chance of a clot forming. Regular monitoring and timely treatment of these narrowings can help reduce the risk of thrombosis, but clots can still occur even with good care.

When a clot forms, a thrombectomy may be needed to clear the blockage and restore blood flow. Thrombectomy is more involved than routine maintenance procedures, but it is a well-established treatment that allows many access sites to continue functioning.

The quicker you are referred and treated for the removal of the clot, the more likely the procedure will be successful.

How the Procedure Works

The access site is cleaned and numbed, and a small catheter is guided into your fistula or graft using ultrasound or X-ray. The clot is then cleared using the method that works best for your access. When the access is flowing well again, the catheter is removed and a small bandage is applied.
