Biography

Umar Waheed, MD, FASDIN, is a board-certified nephrologist with advanced training and expertise in interventional nephrology. At SKI Vascular Center he provides specialized care for patients with kidney disease, with a particular focus on dialysis access creation, maintenance, and complex access salvage. His clinical work centers on optimizing durable access outcomes and reducing catheter dependence through timely, high-quality interventions.

He completed his internal medicine residency at Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, followed by fellowship training in nephrology at The Ohio State University. Dr. Waheed is an active member of the American Society of Diagnostic and Interventional Nephrology, American Society of Nephrology, National Kidney Foundation, and Renal Physicians Association.

Dr. Waheed has contributed to multiple clinical research studies involving angioplasty balloons, stents, drug-coated balloons, and hemodialysis catheters. He was directly involved in the first FDA-approved use of the Ellipsys system for non-surgical arteriovenous fistula creation in an ambulatory surgical center and personally created the first AV fistula as part of that program. His current research includes the Maturation of Arteriovenous Fistula with Automated Sonography Assessments (MAFASA) Trial, which focuses on objective, technology-driven assessment of fistula maturation.

In addition to his clinical and research roles, Dr. Waheed serves as Medical Director and Managing Partner of Southwest Kidney Institute’s ambulatory surgical centers and is a board member of his practice. He is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Arizona and serves as a guest reviewer for the Journal of Vascular Access. His work reflects a consistent focus on clinical quality, innovation in access care, and physician-led governance.
